The broad
and diverse hunting area of Dome Mountain Ranch is one of the top reasons
hunters find more opportunity. Our designated hunting areas combine private
property with the unique option of extended lands in areas of the Gallatin
National Forest. The south end of the hunting area begins in and around
Jardine and Gardiner, Montana, the northern boundary of Yellowstone
National Park. The ability to hunt this area is excellent
for catching both resident and migrating elk as As a hunter
you may have the opportunity to spend several days "watching the
line." This is rugged and pristine elk country. Many big bulls are
taken here season after season.
AREA 313
has historically been the highest harvest area in the United States both
for elk numbers and quality of game taken. No where else in the
lower 48 states can compare. Numerous book elk are taken here each season,
both with rifle and the bow. The area we hunt is a "brow-tined Bull"
only area, which means young elk have the opportunity to mature and better
survive, growing into big Montana bulls!
Heading
north, we are able to hunt a number of drainages where resident as well as
migratory elk will hold up. Locals call this area "The Gauntlet". This is
a 15,000 year old migration trail where the wintering elk from the park
make their way north, eventually going through the main property of the
ranch, which is the eventual culmination of the migration trail.
North of
the ranch are additional hunting areas as well as those which are primarily
hunted from our wilderness camps. In all, Dome Mountain Ranch offers many
thousands of acres of hunting area to hunters. This allows for consistent
variety and increased hunting success, as well as the opportunity to enjoy
a very large slice of the wilderness. The northern herd as well as migrating
elk are available.
The
advantage of private lands which contain a high density of elk, deer and
perfect habitat offers hunters a unique advantage. We manage this
area very carefully, allowing some areas to remain free of hunting
pressure in order to offer refuge for both the resident elk of Dome
Mountain, as well as those pushed in from the surrounding wilderness
areas. Seeing elk daily during your hunt with us is not unusual!
